Courageous Advocacy

Courageous Advocacy

“Love your neighbour as yourself” Mark 12: 29-31

At St Luke’s C of E Primary School, we have a strong emphasis on encouraging our pupils to become courageous advocates, not just locally, but nationally and globally.

In many areas of our curriculum we educate our pupils to understand that it is important to help others when we can, irrespective of who people are or where they come from. This is taught through the teachings of the bible and learning about other courageous advocates including modern day advocates such as  Sir David Attenborough, Malala Yousafzai and Marcus Rashford. This is also taught through examples of past pupils who have continued to challenge and drive forward changes in this area. We have celebrated and welcomed Jordan Jarrett-Bryan (Paralympian and past pupil back to our amazing school)

Our school community and curriculum actively embraces a responsibility for the world in which we live and together we consider the wonder and fragility of our environment, the actions we take, and the impact these actions may have on the well-being of everyone.

Our staff lead by setting an example to our learners. It has now become an established part of our fabric to support and help eradicate homelessness. Our staff join in with others from the SDBEMAT to raise funds to support Robes.

Our school culture encourages justice and courageous advocacy, enabling pupils to make ethical choices and be agents of change in various ways. Here are four key examples:

  • Pupil Ambassadors: A whole school initiative where  pupil leadership teams are responsible for making a positive contribution either to the school, local or global community.
  • We have found that nurturing empathy and understanding is the start of action and response.

All initiatives in school aim to empower our children to claim their voice, take their place as active global citizens, join in with God’s redemptive work in the world, which can be transformative as we ‘tap into’ God’s reality and his vision for the future of His world where justice and mercy will reign. Indeed, we have seen a number of our children go on to raise awareness of issues and fund raise beyond the school gates.
